Cocos Islands: Discovering A Hidden Jewel

The Cocos Islands or Keeling Islands are located in the Indian Ocean. The islands are made up of two atolls and twenty seven coral islands. Only two of the islands are inhabited, they are West Island and Home Island. On West Island the population is mainly made up of ethnic Europeans, while on Home Island the population is mainly native Malays. The climate in the Cocos is tropical and makes it a popular travel destination.

Pulu Keeling National Park is located on North Keeling Island. With the park being so remote, it has helped to maintain the rich and pristine environment here. The flora and forests found on the island are a good example of the original vegetation that once covered all of the islands. The bird watching in the park is amazing. The island is home to many seabird nesting spots. There have been about sixty species of birds recorded on the island. Some that have been spotted are the Common Noddy, Red-Footed Booby, and the White Tern. Crabs are the most widely seen invertebrates crawling across the island. The more common crabs sited in the park are the Red hermit crab, Purple hermit crab, Land crab, and the Red crab. The waters around North Keeling Island are a wonderful place to dive. More than 500 species of fish have been recorded in the azure colored waters around the island. The outer reef slope, lagoon, and the reef flats make up the major marine habitats in the park. Turtles, Bottlenose dolphins, Surgeon fish, starfish, and copious amounts of coral can be seen under the tranquil waves. Visiting Pulu National Park gives guests to the Cook Islands a better understanding of this fragile island ecosystem.

The beaches on the Coco Islands are stretches of soft white sand and dotted with leafy green palm trees. The beaches here are the most popular destination on the islands.
