Christmas Island is located in the Indian Ocean and is an Australian territory. The climate is tropical and has mild heat and humidity. Christmas Island has a wealth of scientific value. The island has been mostly uninhabited until the late nineteenth century. Hence, why most of the population inhabits the northern tip of the island.

Christmas National Park takes up almost 63% of the island. The park is important to the scientific community because it supports a wide range of unique species and habitats. The park contains the last

remaining nesting habitat for the endangered Abbott's Booby. It has been estimated that over 80,000 species of sea bird also nest on the island. This makes bird watching in the park wonderful. The park is also home to the worlds largest population of Robber crabs. The diverse land crab population on the island is some of the most unique on Earth. One of the best times to visit the park is October through November when the adult Red Crabs start to migrate from the forest to the sea. The migration last up to 18 days and is a wonder to see for any visitor. Whether visiting the Christmas Island National Park for the first time or the hundredth, there is always something new to experience.

Christmas Island boasts some of the best scuba diving in the world. The island has some of the longest drop-offs on the planet. The island is surrounded by narrow coral reefs that plunge into a bottomless abyss. This makes it a great place to scuba dive. The reefs have some of the best unspoiled corals in the world. The Acropora and plate corals attract many species of marine life such as eel, butterfly fish, gobies, and surgeon fish. In the months of November through April is the best time to encounter one of the many whale sharks inhabiting the waters around the island. This is an experience that most divers dream about. The many dive shops on the island can help visitors in choosing an amazing diving adventure.

Lily Beach is a popular beach to visit with small children. The beach is a key hole beach with sheer cliffs on either side. There are large trees around the beach that provides shade from the tropical sun. Lily Beach has a large sandy bottom rock pool that is clam at low tide. This makes the water ideal for younger children to play in. During high tide the beach is a great place to watch large waves crash into the rocks. Lily Beach offers something for everyone at any age.
