The Bailiwick of Jersey, simply known as Jersey, is a British dependency off the coast of Normandy, France. This country, along with the Bailiwick of Guernsey together form the Channel Islands. The climate of Jersey is temperate with a cool summer season and mild winters, much different than the typical UK climate.
The Amaizin Maze at La Hougue Farm is a top attraction for tourists seeking adventure and fun. The Barnyard has been totally redone and offers interactive and interesting activities involving animals, tourists can even try their hand at cow milking. The Water area of the farm allows visitors to get their hands wet and pan for gold the old fashioned way using a pan, screen and elbow grease. There are also toboggan races and three go-cart tracks to enjoy. The farm also has tractor rides, Crazy Golf and a castle complex. The main attraction however, the farmer makes a complex maze in a corn field with a different theme each year, guests are given a map that outlines the “challenges” and a scavenger hunt, tourists must complete each challenge before being spotted by a staff member, this activity is quite entertaining for people of all ages and is one of the reasons why the farm has become so popular.
The Jersey War Tunnels through its exhibits and displays tells the real story of the German occupation of Jersey, during World War II. A tour guide will take visitors through the very tunnels that were once the location of German soldiers, this will allow a taste of what it was like for those who lived during this historical event. On the grounds, is a Garden of Reflection that serves as a memorial to those fallen heroes of the war. Another structure worth noting in Jersey is the Elizabeth Castle. The castle was built on an inlet in St. Aubin Bay, to protect Jersey from the invading French troops, for more than 300 years. Visitors to the castle can either access it by taking the medieval pirate-themed ferry, or by foot during low tide. Climbing to the top of the castle, there are spectacular views of the bay and St. Heiler. There is a midday parade and mock sword fighting every day, and a “call to arms”, at which time the cannon is fired. Throughout the season the Jersey Militia, 4 th Regiment, 2 nd Battalion will be making period visits, providing live demonstrations of how military life was during the 18 th century.
For the traveler who wants to see an atypical attraction then a visit to the Jersey Goldsmiths is in order. This is a family owned business first opened its doors in 1986 and has since become a way of life on the island of Jersey. Lion Park is located on the grounds and provides viewers with exquisite displays centered around yellow and white gold, as well as platinum. For those interested, the Bench is where a craftsman can be seen making jewelry and will give an in-depth informational talk about how gold found, manufactured and other interesting information. An interesting site is the locations “mascot”, Goldie a red-kneed tarantula, who sits protectively and guards a $1 million display of gold bullion. Also on display, is the famous Aston Martin car from the James Bond movies, and the Triumph Roadster from the TV show, Bergerac.
