Eritrea - Tourism, travel, and recreation

Because Eritrea inherited the entire coastline of Ethiopia, there is long-term potential for development of tourism. However, recent figures have dropped significantly. In 1997 there were about 410,000 tourist arrivals. In 2000, there were 70,355. In 2000, there were 4,497 hotel rooms with 9,287 beds and a 45% occupancy rate. Passports and visas are required. Proof of yellow fever vaccination may be required. In 1999, the US government estimated the cost of staying in Asmara at $184 per day. In other areas, the cost goes down to about $81 a day or less.
