The US Virgin Islands are located in the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, consisting of three main islands; St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, as well as several other smaller islands, along with the historical Water Island. The islands are known for having white sand beaches and beautiful coral reefs ideally suited for snorkeling. Today, tourism is the predominant economic industry and the island is host to an annual two million visitors each year.

The Salt River Bay National Park and Ecological Preserve is a living museum on the island of St. Croix. The park was created in 1992 as a part of the national park system and Government of the United States Virgin Islands. The preserve is home to some of the largest remaining mangrove forests in the Virgin Islands, coral reefs and a submarine canyon. Few places on the globe can engage the imagination so vividly and draw its visitors into its beauty and virtue.

On the island of St. John, a company offers a popular tour of the islands, Calypso Catamaran Charters. The company provides half or full day tours of the different cays, caves and beaches around the islands. The famous “Baths at Virgin Gorda”, is a series of exotic pools and small grottos formed by the gigantic boulders spread out across the beaches. The location is ideal for exploration, snorkeling and enjoying the sunny white sand beaches.

On the south side of St. John island is the St. John Spice Shop. This is a definite stop for those people who want to take home some edible goodies from the islands. The shop is famous for grill rubs, hot sauces, vanilla extra and flavored Caribbean rums. Many of the spices in the shop are hand mixed combinations of things found fresh on the islands and the coffees offered in the shop are best-sellers.

Located 1.5 miles off the coast of St. Croix is Buck Island Reef National Monument. The monument is 880 acres and includes 176 acres of land engulfed by 704 acres of water and natural coral reefs. The monument was established to preserve one of the largest marine gardens in the Caribbean Sea. The park was established in 1961 and expanded in 2001, and is one of the few federally protected areas in the Virgin Islands. Visitors to the park can enjoy snorkeling, swimming, hiking, picnicking and bird watching.

Other interesting places to visit on the islands include; Hamilton House, the boyhood home of Alexander Hamilton; The Lutheran Church built in 1740 and Apothecary Hall, which is the only museum devoted to the preservation and history of Danish pharmacy in the Western Hemisphere. There are walking tours offered by St. Croix Heritage Tours. Guests are invited to accompany a tour guide through East Mount Washington, the St. Croix woodcarving operation and Estate Little Princess. Each tour lasts around an hour and provides guests with a complete and detailed history of these fascinating locations.
