The country of Suriname is located in South America and is bordered by French Guiana and Guyana. The official language of Suriname is Dutch. Suriname is one of only four non-Spanish speaking nations in South America. Suriname is located on the equator and gives the country a very hot tropical climate. The country has two wet seasons from April to August and from November to February. Suriname also has two dry seasons from August to November and February to April. 12% of the land in Suriname is national parks and lakes. Over 80% of this country is tropical rainforest.

Galibi Nature Reserve is located in the northeast of Suriname. In 1969 the area became a national reserve to protect the nesting beaches of sea turtles. Four endangered species of turtles nest on the beaches from February to August. The Leatherback, Green, Olive Ridley, and the Hawksbill turtle are endangered and call the Suriname beaches home during the nesting season. There are also many species of dolphin to be seen frolicking off the shores. Squirrel monkeys and numerous birds play amongst the trees and give the visitor a chance to catch a glimpse of these exotic creatures. In between watching the wildlife on the beaches, visitors are encouraged to take a swim in the Atlantic Ocean and relax.

Raleighvallen Nature Preserve is the largest uninhabited rainforest on the planet. The reserve is in the central part of Suriname and has about 1000 visitors a year. The reserve was first established in 1998 and has no permanent human settlements. The surrounding three villages of Witagron, Kaaimanston, and Kwamalaamutu offer guided tours of the preserve and is the only nearby lodging. The rainforest houses over 400 species of birds and 185 species of mammals. The most spectacular birds to see here are the Red -and-Green and the Blue-and -Gold Macaws. The Macaws light up the forest canopy with their splashes of vibrant color and are a sight to behold. The stealthy jaguar is at home in the reserve and is now one of the top attractions visitors hope to see when touring the jungle. So much of the Raleighvallen Nature Preserve is still undiscovered and the site's diversity is not truly known. This is one of the most unique regions on the planet.

Fishing in Suriname is a popular past time among visitors. Fisherman can sport fish here all year round. The country has many lakes, rivers, and swamps to fish. The swamps are a challenge even for the most advanced fisherman. Traditional local techniques or using the latest equipment in the waters here give Suriname the most unique fishing experience for visitors.
