Paraguay is sometimes referred to as Corazon de America, or “Heart Of America”, because of its location in South America. The country is named after the Paraguay River which runs directly through the middle, from north to south. Social life of the inhabitants relies around the family, children, extended family and blood relations and godparents. Residents of the country are both warm and welcoming to each other, foreigners and tourists.

The city has many different attractions that draw visitors from all over the world. It is home to historical buildings, plazas, shopping venues, museums and restaurants.

In Asuncion, visitors can tour the old part of town which is rich in architectural diversity. The Estate of Carlos Antonio Lopez lies high above the city, the botanical gardens of the estate are located along the banks of the Paraguay River and there is also a golf course and small zoo on the grounds. The Lopez residence was converted into a museum complete with historical exhibits and a library.

The Central Circuit is a popular tourist itinerary of 125 miles long that stretches along some of the most important historical routes in the city. San Lorenzo is a site of the university that was founded in 1775 and has an exquisite gothic-styled church also located on the grounds. The specialty of the village of Ita is Domingo Martinez which since it was founded in 1539, has been producing hand painted black clay Gallinita hens. While on Lake Ypacarai, is the holiday resort town of San Bernadino, its beaches and lake shores are very popular during the summer time and it also has “Camping 19”, a local favorite campground that is frequented by travelers who enjoy hiking, backpacking and camping.

The spectacular Iguazu Falls are located in Chaco, which borders both Brazil and Argentina. The falls are an extremely popular place for tourists to visit and Chaco is the fastest growing town in the country and has a very cosmopolitan environment. Chaco is also a wonderful starting point for a visit to both Monday Falls and Iguazu Falls, which are only a short drive away. The Italpu Dam is the largest hydroelectric complex in the world and stretches out over and area of 112 miles. The location is a prime spot for viewing a unique ecosystem for both birds and wildlife. To the south, Encarnacion has many colonial structures and a waterfront area with gauchos and dirt roads. Visitors can enjoy water sports, fishing, sailing, camping and going on a walking tour of the surrounding sites.

During the 16th century, the Company of Jesus began the conversion of the Guarini culture to Christianity. As a result of this, the natives began living in larger villages which were structured around Christianity beliefs and values. The Guarini people were skilled builders and craftsman and left behind a large number of churches, sculptures and paintings which centered on their new beliefs. Seven of the biggest Jesuit missions remain in Paraguay and the ones in Trinidad del Parana and Jesus de Taravangue have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
