Vacation and Travel to Mozambique

Mozambique is in southwestern Africa and is comparable in size to the country of Turkey. The country has two seasons, wet and dry, however, the climate is considered to be tropical. The main language spoken in the country is Portuguese, however, the Bantu speak several different languages like Swahili, Makhuwa, Sena, Ndau and Shangann, all of which are closely rooted in Portuguese.

For tourists seeking a landmark for Mozambique, it would have to be the Praca dos Trabalhadores. This structure is located at the end of Guerro Popular where there is a statue honoring the fallen heroes of Mozambique during World War I. The statue is of a woman who has killed a snake, possibly a cobra, that had been responsible for terrorizing local residents. The snake was said to have fallen into a bowl of hot porridge she was carrying and died.

The Fortress or Fortaleza is another historical landmark that is a must-see in Mozambique. The fort was built in 1781, during the colonial era, by the Portuguese and was the center of the original settlement. It is famous for being the oldest settlement in Maputo and carries the same design as the other Portuguese forts that were built along the coastline of Mozambique. Today, the fort is a military museum and the fort is the site of annual commemoration ceremonies marking the anniversary of the independence of Mozambique.

Gustav Eiffel was most famously remembered for designing the Eiffel Tower in France. However, he is also responsible for designing other historical landmarks throughout Mozambique, though he never visited the country. The Railway Station on Praca and The Iron House. The Iron House was built in 1892, and is made entirely of steel from top to bottom. Originally intended to be used as the Governors house, but because it was constructed entirely of steel the home was far to hot to be used.

Samora Machel, was the first president of Mozambique from 1975 through 1986. He perished in a plane crash in 1986 and the village commissioned a statue in his honor. The Samora Machel is situated at the top end of Avenue Samora Michal and draws tourists who want to experience a piece of Mozambique history.

Another attraction on Avenue Samora Michal is the Louis Trichardt Trek Memorial. Louis Trichardt and his team tried to establish a sea route through Mozambique and eventually was unsuccessful because most of his team died from malaria in 1883. The remains of Louis Trichardt and his wife are located at the shrine. The attraction boasts a water feature done with mosaic tiles that contains the crests of all the places that Trichardt and his team had visited.

There is also a regular ferry service that takes tourists from the harbor of Maputo to the island of Inhaca. Here visitors can enjoy seeing the Maritime Museum, historical lighthouses, and the 236,000 hectare Maputo Elephant Reserve. The reserve is home to crocodiles, jackals, and a pack of 200 elephants and many more animals.

There are many luxurious accommodations on the island, as well as resorts that offer to take visors on a wildlife safari. The Rani Bay Island Resort and Spa is an absolutely wonderful place to stay while visiting Mozambique. The resort offers indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a unique dive pool, activity centers, and is located close to Victoria Falls, which some claim are the most beautiful place in Mozambique. In Members, there is a private island that only contains thirteen beach chalets, which means total and complete privacy. No matter where visitors decide to stay during their visit, Mozambique has some of the most beautiful and unspoiled regions in all of Africa.
