The Maldives is an island nation located in south India on the Lackshadweep Islands. The territory has 1,192 islets and 250 islands that are inhabited. The tourism industry has been the key element to boosting the islands economy and there are eighty-seven resorts in operation currently. The island is comprised of coral debris and living coral reefs, which acting as a natural barrier forms lagoons around the islands.

The capital of Maldives is Male', many historical and religious structures of importance are located here. There are houses with ancient exhibits of Thor Heyerdahl, an archaeologist, who found carvings and statues belonging to the sultan. The Sultan Garden and Museum were previously part of the Royal Palace, inside the park is a veritable collection of various tropical flora and animals on exhibit.

Artificial Beach is a man made beach located in the Maldives and is very popular with the locals, because the capital city has no other beaches to speak of. There are sports shows, games, and live music shows held on the beach during the summer months proving that this was a much needed addition to the city. It is a place to go in the city when people want to get away and relax from the hustle and bustle of the crowded city.

The Hukuru Miskiiy, translates to mean “Friday Mosque”, was built in 1656, during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim. The inside and outside of the mosque was constructed using coral stones, which contain Arabic sayings and intricate carvings. The roof, windows and supporting framework are composed of teak, red sandalwood and redwood. Inside the mosque are the remains of past sultans, heroes and noblemen. The name “Friday”, has an important significance because it is the day when all men go to the main temple at noon, for prayers and religious counsel.

Male' most popular place for socializing and relaxing is the Republic Square, which was built in 1989. The location is laid out among a beautiful square of green grass and ripe with foliage and tropical flowers. There are commercial buildings, shops and restaurants all sprinkled along the boardwalk and locals gather in the evening to watch the boats returning to harbor and the breathtaking view of the setting sun.

Located to the west of Republic Square is another interesting site, the Male' Fish Market. This location is the transportation hub of the Maldives and is always alive with activity. Tourists get the chance to see fresh catches being hoisted off the boats and how life along the water is really lived.

The Presidential Palace is built on the same location that housed other presidential homes in the past. The palace is the official residence of the President of Maldives, as well as contains the offices of the President. The President is there most of the time to personally greet visitors and is known for his warmth and graciousness when receiving a visit.

The most famous and impressive of all Maldives landmarks would have to be the Islamic Center, which was opened in 1984. The Centers Grand Friday Mosque is the largest in the Maldives and attracts some 5,000 worshipers every week. The mosque has a shiny gold colored dome which makes it standout and inside are ornate wood carvings and Arabic calligraphy. The mosque also holds a library and conference hall and welcomes tourists to come inside and view its beauty.
