The Faroe Islands are located in Denmark, in between the Norwegian Sea and North Atlantic Ocean. The terrain of the islands is rugged and rocky and the coast is bordered by cliffs, the island has no major lakes or rivers. All types of mammals found on the islands were introduced by humans, so there are actually no indigenous species.

Vestmanna is a town in the Faroe Islands that used to be a major ferry port, until an undersea tunnel was built from Vagar to Kvivik to Stykkio. It is surrounded by major mountain ranges such as the Haegstafjuall, Okslin, Loysingafjall and Moskurfjall. These mountains draw tourists for their majestic beauty and wildlife exploration and photography opportunities. There are also boat tours from Vestmanna to Vestmannabjorgini which allows tourists to explore the charming villages and experience a different way of life, away from the hustle and bustle of bigger, more touristy type cities.

Outside of Vestmanna are caves and impressive bird cliffs, there are daily two hour boat tours, which makes Vestmanna a popular destination for travelers who want to view a wide array of bird species. Boats bob below hundred foot seaside cliffs and take viewers to areas where they can watch razorbills, guillemots, fulmars and kittiwakes soaring overhead. This trip is a definite must for those bird lovers who want to see the wide array of bird species that make the cliffs of Vestmanna their home.

Kollafjordur is a town located on the east coast of Streymoy. With a total population of just around 1,000 inhabitants, the town is small and quaint. This are is of note because in 2002, the first factory producing pelagic fish was opened here. Guests can arrange to tour the factory and see how the fish are vacuum packed and processed before heading to marketplaces all over the world. For the visitor who is interested the waters surrounding Kollafjordur are an excellent place to fish for blue whiting, herring and mackerel.

Thorshavnar, is the shipyard capital of the Faroe Islands. Established in 1963, the Thorshavnar Skipasmioja Ltd., is one of the largest in the Faroes and has built over thirty-five vessels since its doors first opened. In recent years, the shipyard has become completely modernized with state-of-the-art equipment and computerized machines. Guests are invited to take tours of the shipyard and see how the vessels are built from start to finish.

Kirkjubour is the smallest southernmost village on the island of Streymoy. It is here that some of the most beautiful and important historical sites are located. There is an unfinished cathedral and a 900 year-old farmhouse which has a museum and is still in used today. St. Olav Church is a small white church located near the ruins, built in 1110, it was the major church for the Faroe Islands and the bishops seat.

The Faroe Islands has recently gained world wide popularity as a top tourist destination of choice. According to a survey conducted in 2007, by National Geographic Magazine, Faroe Islands came out shining as the most appealing destination in the world. The island received praise for its unspoiled beauty, nature preservation efforts, historical structures and local pride all across the islands. The panel mentioned one of the most interesting places to go in the Faroes, is the island of Koltur. Visitors can meet the local farmer, tour the island and walk through a living agricultural museum and sample traditional food of the islands.

There are many wonderful hotels and hostels available to accommodate travelers who venture to the islands. In particular, the Hotel Hafnia in Torshavn is located right in the heart of the capital and within strolling distance to historical monuments and nightlife. The hotels restaurant provides some of the best cuisine on the islands and is a well-known favorite of the locals as well. The Bladypi Guesthouse is a smaller, more personal hotel in Torshavn. Guests are invited to stroll through the village, explore the architecture and watch a dancer performing the medieval chain dance.
