Poas Volcano, Costa Rica

The country of Costa Rica is located in Central America. Costa Rica also has several islands including the Cocos Island and Calero Island. Each year, Costa Rica is host to some 1.9 million people who come to visit, making it the most visited place in the Central American region.

The Arenal Observatory was privately founded in 1987 and is the only one in the Arenal Volcano National Park. The lodge is located on the grounds of a macadamia nut plantation and a volcano. This is one of the most popular volcano research facilities in Central America. Guests can take hiking tours and view the volcanoes up close and view some breathtaking scenery along the way. Also located within the park is the Arenal Botanical Garden, which contains well maintained trails and a butterfly garden. The garden has over 1,200 species of plants from Costa Rica and other areas.

Situated along a slice of land between the Caribbean and a maze of canals, is the village of Tortuguero, Costa Rica. The small village is awash with rustic wooden huts and the inhabitants make their living from the land through agriculture. Tourists can only reach the village by the Intercoastal Waterway or a small plane. Taking a tour boat to Tortuguero via the canal is another experience altogether, providing interesting views of the landscape and animals of the area. There is hiking, kayaking and canoing offered which provides an excellent opportunity to do some wildlife observation.

In Quepos, Costa Rica there are many attractions for tourists, but the most popular one would be the Rainmaker. This is a unique locale which offers guests the ability to tour the waterfall by a series of vine bridges and walkways. It was the first such aerial walkway in Central America and the bridges stretch out over 820 feet and reaches 25 stories in some areas. The rainforest trail leads down to the river basin to a canyon, along the way passing waterfalls and streams. The bridges were designed to protect the canyon floor and there are many other hiking trails along the 4,940 acre park.

Cano Island is a biological reserve located in west Drake Bay. The Cano Island Reserve also includes the ocean surrounding Cano Island. There are tropical beaches and hiking trails all over the island that lead to a ridge that is 360 feet above sea level. Because the ocean water is so warm, this makes for excellent diving and snorkeling opportunities. There are four particular dive sites located around coral reefs, diverse marine life and exploration of underwater rock formations.

Costa Rica is located near the equatorial line, which means that it has a tropical climate year round. The seasons can be split into two groups; verano, which means summer and inviemo, which means winter. Summer is from December to May with winter occurring during the months of November through May. The island experiences an average temperature of around 80 °F and cooler temperatures in the mountain areas.

There are numerous hotels all over Costa Rica that will provide tourists with comfortable and tranquil accommodations. The Hotel Grano de Oro in San Jose, is a turn of the century mansion that was renovated and turned into a small hotel. There are thirty-two total rooms on the property, single and double rooms as well as suites are available. There is a restaurant, gardens, patio area and an exquisite gift shop located on the premises, this location is prime for such top attractions as the Jade and Gold Museums. Located on the grounds of La Paz Waterfall Gardens is the Peace Lodge. The rooms are luxurious and contain a fireplace, private balcony and waterfall showers. This location is perfect for the guest who wants to experience the rainforest environment indoors.
