French Polynesia is a French overseas collective located in the southern Pacific Ocean. The islands cover a total of 1,622 square miles and scattered throughout almost 1 million square miles of ocean. The islands have the lowest crime rate of within France and any territories, and Charles Darwin visit the islands of French Polynesia during his 5 year around the world trip. The island of Bora Bora is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef, while in the center of the island is the remnants of an extinct volcano. What makes Bora Bora so popular, are the over-the-water bungalows, which are a standard feature all over the island.

At the southern tip of Bora Bora, sits Matira Beach, which is the most popular beach on the island. It has white sand beaches that spread across the expanse from the Hotel Bora Bora to Matira Point. At the eastern edge of the hotel, there are walking trails that go directly past a collection World War II coastal defense guns and machinery. In the evening during low tide, visitors can actually wade from the beach all the way to the barrier reef in the shallow water. The shallow lagoon surrounding Bora Bora is more suited to snorkeling than diving, with some of the best locations being at the point of Hotel Bora Bora. There are over 700 different kinds of tropical fish, gigantic manta rays,sharks and other marine wildlife in the waters surrounding the island. There are also glass bottom boat tours available in the harbor to the south of the hotel.

In the middle of the Bora Bora lagoon, is the Lagoonarium. This is an outdoor aquarium full of the colorful marine life that swim in the lagoon. Visitors are not limited to simply viewing the fish from the outside, but are rather encouraged to pick up a snorkel and mask and jump in to swim with turtles, sharks, rays and other tropical fish. The environment is safe for all ages and conducted under the watchful eye of an experienced guide. The guides at the facility also hold daily feeding shows for the sharks and rays, which also proves to be an interesting sight to behold. There are full and half day tours avialable, each which offers guests the chance to swim in the Lagoonarium and taking an outrigger canoe on a full tour of the island and allows the chance to snorkel in the Bora Bora Coral Garden. At the conclusion of a full day tour, guests are invited to a sit down barbecue picnic featuring traditional fish and chicken dishes.

One of the best ways to explore the island and experience the sights is to take a 4x4 tour. The Tupana Safari 4x4 Tour, takes visitors past rugged coastline and beautiful tropical foliage found on the island. The tour guide also takes people to visit World War II sites, ancient stone temples and other important sites on the island. Local residents serve as informative guides and will provide guests with a complete history of the island and knowledge about how life is lived on Bora Bora.

At the local hotels such as the Moana Beach Parkyroyal, tourists can view traditional Polynesian dances being performed. The women who participate in the dance observe the traditions that were handed down from the early part of the 19th century. They adorn themselves in costumes consisting of a skirt made of island grasses and soft wood, a belt and bra top made of seashells or coconuts. Dancers hold feathers and pompoms to accentuate their movements in time with drums, conch shells and ukuleles.

With a mild, tropical climate, Bora Bora has an average daily temperature of between 77-87 °F. With its white sand beaches, beautiful reef system and exquisite scenery, Bora Bora is every vacationers dream come true.
