Belize located in South America was once known as British Honduras. The country gained its independence in 1981. It was once part of the Mayan Empire and then the Spanish Empire. Belize is the only country in South America where English is the official language. Spanish and Kriol is also widely spoken in the country.

The Great Blue Hole located off the coast of Belize is a large underwater sinkhole. The hole measures 1,000 feet across and 400 feet deep. The Great Blue Hole was created when limestone caves collapsed during the ice age and the sea level began to rise. Jacques Cousteau made the site famous by declaring it one of the worlds top ten scuba destinations back in 1971. Here, divers will encounter crystal clear water with many opportunities to observe reef sharks, giant groupers, and nurse sharks.

The small limestone coral island called Caye Caulker is a backpackers heaven. This tiny island is five miles long and one mile wide. While Caye Caulker may be small, it boasts 30 tiny hotels and many restaurants and shops. The island is accessible by small planes and water taxis.

Located in south-central Belize is the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. This nature reserve was founded in 1990 and is prime country to observe the native flowers and plants. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary was also the first wilderness sanctuary to protect the majestic jaguar. The sanctuary is one of the best sites for jaguar preservation in the world.

The ancient Maya city of Lamanai is located in northern Belize. In the mid-1970's the vast majority of the site started being excavated. The three pyramids stand amid the lush green jungle. The summit of the High Temple offers a beautiful view of a nearby lagoon and is worth the climb. The site is under constant excavation and has a small museum on site. The museum gives the history of the pyramids and the Maya city of Lamanai.

On the island of Ambergris Caye is the town of San Pedro. The town is known for the incredible scuba diving. San Pedro also has its own hyperbaric decompression chamber because so many people choose to dive here. For a great diving excursion some of the best outfitters are found in San Pedro. The island is also a good jumping off point to charter boats to explore some of the other islands of Belize.

The Belize Zoo was founded in 1983 to provide a home for a collection of wildlife that had been used in the making of films about tropical forests. When the zoo first began, it was realized that a majority of the countries citizens were unaware of the many native species that shared the land with them. Since then, the Belize Zoo has become very active in conservation and education efforts in the country. The zoo showcases the native mammals, birds, and reptiles of Belize.

The Hamanasi Resort is located just outside of Hopkins and offers treehouse and beach front rooms. The resort also offers diving and rain forest packages of every size. The Hamanasi resort is an eco-resort located in on 21 acres of lush land teeming with wild birds and the fragrant smell of orchids. The Chabil Mar Villas Resort in Placenia is a unique resort. The condominium villas provide guests with an ocean front view. It boasts many amenities that few hotels offer in Belize. The modern Chabil Mar Villas Resort is filled with many of its own lush gardens to sit and relax on a vacation in Belize.

The warm tropical climate and eco-friendly resorts in Belize make it a favorite among travelers. This wonderful country has something for everyone to do. From diving, hiking through the national preservers, or just lying on the beach enjoying the sunshine, Belize is paradise found.
