Australia is the smallest continent located on the southern hemisphere. The countries surrounding Australia are Indonesia, East Timor, New Zealand, and the Solomon Islands just to name a few. It is the only country in the world to occupy an entire continent.

The Sydney Opera House located in Sydney, New South Whales is one of the most recognized landmarks in Australia. The opera house was designed by Danish architect Jorn Utzon . It is home to the Sydney Symphony and the Sydney Theater Company. Many traveling theater troupes and ballets also preform at the opera house. The opera house also has housed many other musical acts since it's opening in 1973.

Australia has some of the most unique wildlife in the world. From kangaroos in the outback to saltwater crocodiles swimming off the coast. Many exotic plants and animals call Australia home. Animal watching in the wild is a popular pastime for locals and tourist. Many visitors enjoy taking a trip to the Australia Zoo located on the Sunshine Coast near Beerwah/Glass House Mountains. The zoo was founded by Robert Irwin in 1970. It has gained popularity over the years thanks to the late Steve Irwin and the Discovery Channel popular show “The Crocodile Hunter”.

The cuisine in Australia has become vastly diverse in the past few decades. No longer is food the traditional English and Dutch fare as it was in the past. The food of today has been heavily influenced by it's Asian neighbors. You will find restaurants with Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai influenced dishes. There are also Greek, Mediterranean and Italian cuisines available due to the influx of immigration during the 1950's and 1960's. But, no trip to the land down under would be complete with out experiencing an old fashioned barbecue. Be it roasted meats or an array of local seafood, this is a popular tradition and nobody should leave without attending at least one.

The Gold Coast is the second largest city in Australia. The climate is subtropical which makes it very popular with travelers. The Gold Coast has some of the finest surfing beaches and has been the home of many prestigious surfing competitions. Not only is the surfing popular, the many waterways offer fishing and boating opportunities. At night the city comes alive with nightclubs and entertainment venues. From its tall skyscrapers to its golden beaches, the Gold Coast has many enjoyable and interesting activities designed for people of all ages.

When traveling to Australia the temperature varies from region to region. From November to March the weather will is warm or hot in most places. April through September, in the more northern regions offer warm days and crisp cool nights. Do take into consideration that the seasons are opposite in Australia to those of the Northern Hemisphere. This factor should be taken into consideration when choosing a destination to visit.

Hotels and resorts are plentiful throughout Australia. The Blue Sydney in Sydney Australia offers a luxurious stay in the business and shopping district of Woolloomooloo, which is close to the Sydney Opera House. The Mai Tia Resort in Port Douglas, is the perfect place for honeymooners. The tranquil views and salt water swimming pool is a weary travelers dream.

Even though most of Australia is a semi-arid desert it is still has a diverse environment, from mangrove swamps to the popular “outback”. It is also home to the world's largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef offers some of the best scuba diving in the world. From beaches to coral reefs and the bustling nightlife that it offers, Australia has an abundance of things to do and see.
