Malta - Judicial system



The superior courts consist of a constitutional court (with the power to review laws and executive acts), two courts of appeal, the civil court, court of magistrates, criminal court, and special tribunals. The president, on the advice of the prime minister, appoints the chief justice and 16 judges. Retirement is at age 65 for judges and age 60 for magistrates. The judiciary operates in an independent manner. Defendants in criminal cases have the right to counsel of choice. Indigent defendants are afforded courtappointed counsel at public expense.
