Suriname - Armed forces



The Suriname National Army consists of army, air force, and naval components, with a strength of about 1,800 in 2000 (army 1,400, navy 240, and air force 160). The army included one infantry battalion, one mechanized cavalry squadron, and one military police brigade. The navy mans three patrol craft, and the air force operates four combat aircraft and no armed helicopters. The defense budget was $8.5 million in 1997 or 1.6% of GDP.
