Canada - Armed forces



In 2002 the armed forces numbered 52,300 active and 35,400 reserve personnel. The army (land forces) consisted of 19,300 individuals including 6,100 women. Equipment included 114 main battle tanks. The air force (air command) had a strength of 13,500, with 140 combat aircraft. The navy (maritime command) had 9,000 members including 2,800 women. Canadian troops were stationed with UN peacekeeping troops in Bosnia, and Canadian personnel also participated in peacekeeping operations in seven other regions. Paramilitary organizations had 9,350 members and consisted of the Canadian Coast Guard and Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Defense expenditures in 2001–02 totaled C $7.9 billion or 1.1% of GDP.
