Palau: Trekking From Island to Island

Palau is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean and is one the youngest nations on the planet. Palau is made up of many islands with the most populous being Peleliu, Koror, Angaur, and Babeldaob. The climate on the islands is tropical with an average temperature of 82 degrees. Typhoons are rare here because the islands are located just outside the main typhoon zone.

Jellyfish Lake is a popular attraction on the islands. The lake is filled with tons of floating jellyfish. The jellyfish have descended and evolved over the course of time from the spotted jellyfish. The lake is completely isolated, but at one time the lake had an ocean outlet. The outlet soon closed up and trapped the jellyfish in the lake. Without any natural predators, the jellyfish adapted and developed smaller stinging cells. This gives visitors the ability to swim amongst these usually poisonous creatures. Palau is the only place on the planet to enjoy this one of a kind experience.

The Palau Aquarium is a great way to discover the marine life of the islands without getting wet. The aquariums main goal is to bring awareness of how fragile the marine ecosystem of the surrounding islands is. Here visitors can view marine life in the oceans depths. The aquarium highlights rare and unusual creatures such as Butterfly fish, Dart fish, fan corals, and cave dwelling marine life. The Palau Aquarium also has one of the largest reef exhibits in the world. The exhibit shows off a diverse collection of corals, sharks, and even the elusive saltwater crocodile.

The Rock Islands of Palau are a great place to take a boat trip. These are a group of rounded and foliage covered small isles. The isles are uninhabited and are a great place for relaxing on the white sand beaches or diving in the warm blue waters. The diving off of the Rock Islands treats divers and snorkelers to an array of things to discover. The isles have blue holes, reefs, amazing drop-offs, and sunken wrecks of World War II ships waiting to be rediscovered under the waves.

The cuisine of Palau is diverse and offers many choices. Many of the local dishes consist of pork, chicken, seafood, taro and many other local root vegetables. The cuisine has also been heavily influenced by the Korean and Chinese cultures. For visitors that are not so adventurous, pizza, past, and hamburgers can be found on the islands. The most popular drink among islanders is made out of coconut milk, the root of the Kava plant, and chewed betel nuts. This drink is not for novices because of the alcohol content. The islands of Palau, is a gastronomes adventure waiting to happen.

Babeldoab is the largest island in Palau and is a beautiful place to hike. The trails are cool and airy underneath the large trees and also free of bugs. Visitors hiking Babeldoab will find many waterfalls hidden away in the lush tropical jungle. The island also has a large lake and many war relics left over from World War II. Along the trails, hikers will find ancient stone pillars and caves, along with remote villages dotted along the trails. Hiking on Babeldoab gives visitors a better understanding for the natural history of the islands.
