Norway, is also know as the Kingdom of Norway and is located in Northern Europe and occupies an area in the Scandinavia Peninsula. Norway was the first European nation to declare its independence in the 20th century after World War II, at which time rapid growth was experienced and this made Norway one of the richest countries in the world and it is rated as one of the safest places to live.

Another interesting fact about Norway, it was home to some of the worlds greatest Polar explorers; it is the home of Roald Amundsun, who was the first man to ever to visit the South Pole and was also the first man to ever visit both Poles. Erling Kagge, was another Norwegian known for his expeditions, he was the first to visit both Poles and the top of Mount Everest as well. Fridjtof Nansen on the other hand was the first man to ever cross Greenland. There are two museums devoted to Polar expeditions, the Fram and Ski Museums, both located in Oslo, Norway.

Norway is also world famous for its fjords. A fjord is a steep-walled inlet, created when two or more glaciers come together and the resulting valley is filled with sea water. Fjords were a result of the Ice Ages, when the ices retreated some 12,000 years ago. Norway has two of the three longest fjords in the world. The fjords are included on UNESCO's (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage List and National Geographic magazine has named the Fjords of Norway as one of the most popular of all World Heritage sites.

When traveling between Oslo and Bergen, there is a train-ride that is considered by many to be the most scenic and beautiful in all the world. There is no other train ride in all of Europe that is at a higher altitude than that of the one between Oslo and Bergen. There is also a detour to Flamsbaden, which provides breathtaking views of waterfalls and snowcapped mountains. Once you get to the foot of the mountains you can enjoy the splendor of Aurland Fjord, a branch of the worlds longest, Sognefjord. The Flam Railway attracts tourists from all over the world and is easily one of the most popular attractions in all of Norway.

Tysfjord is the place to go if killer whale watching is on the agenda. The hungry whales return every fall in pursuit of the herring returning to the fjords. Pods of 500 to 700 killer whales come in droves to feast upon the bounty. The surrounding landscape and the unique lighting conditions in the late fall make this a whale watching expedition to truly remember.

Norway has an ever changing climate from year-to-year. The average temperature can swing from 8 degrees Celsius along the west coast area and to well below freezing in the mountain areas. The coldest months in the year are January through March, while the warmest month is July. Of course, the coastline and mountain regions will vary and reach their peaks at some other point in time.
