The village of Kinderdijk is famous for its windmills. The people of the village needed a drainage system for the land and built windmills along the water to dry the farmland. The windmills were built around 1740. There are 19 windmills placed along the edge of the water. The group of windmills located in Kinderdijk is the largest concentration of old windmills in the world. The windmills are no longer in use and have been replaced by the largest pump system in Europe. The Wereld Erfgoed Kinderdijk foundation now maintains and preserves the windmills and the surrounding area. One of the windmills is open for visitors and on most days is operational.
