The country of Macedonia is located on the Balkan Peninsula. It is in the Southeastern Europe and is landlocked. The climate in Macedonia goes from a Mediterranean to a continental climate. The winters here are somewhat cold and the summers are dry and hot. Macedonia is also known for its many lakes and forests. This country is full of many water resources.

The ancient town of Ohrid was built between the 7th and 19th century. Ohrid is one of the oldest settlements in Europe. The town is home to the Slav monastery called St. Pantelejomon. Ohrid also has over 800 icons done in the Byzantine style. The town collection was painted between the 11th and 14th century. This collection is only rivaled by the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow. Ohrid with its ancient architecture is a living museum. Strolling up and down its streets gives the visitor a chance to step back in time.

Next to the historical town of Ohrid, is Lake Ohrid. The lake is also nick named “Macedonia's freshwater sea”. This body of water is so huge, it gives the impression of being a sea. The lake is so clear in some spots, that the visitor can see almost 22 meters below. The clarity of the water in Lake Ohrid is due to its many underwater springs along the shores of the lake. This gorgeous lake is surrounded by beautiful mountains and is a great place to take some amazing landscape pictures.

The city of Prilep is nestled below the hills of Western Macedonia. Prilep is the tobacco capital of this country. In the fall, it is common to see tobacco drying all over the city. The worlds whitest marble also comes from this region. It has been used at the White House and on the base of the Statue of Liberty just to name a few. Prilep is home to many ancient churches and even a mosque. The Old Bazaar in Prilep is small, but a great place to mingle with the locals and get a feel for the culture in this quaint town.

The Markovi Kuli Fortress is about 30 minutes outside of Prilep. This ancient stone structure dates back to the 13th and 14th century. It sits upon a limestone base and gives the visitor some chances to take in the amazing view of nearby Prilep. The best time to visit the site is at sunset to watch the changing of colors wash the stones in beautiful hues.

Heraclea Lyncestis lies in the north west region of Macedonia. The town has an ancient Roman theater built by the emperor Hadrain and wasn't discovered until 1968. The Basilicas in Heraclea Lyncestis have some of the best examples of mosaics of Byzantine art. The best time to travel here to see the mosaics is during the summer and spring months. The mosaics are covered up in the winter to protect them from the weather.

The Inex Gorica Ohrid Hotel in the city of Ohrid is a five star hotel. The Inex Gorica has a private beach that is surrounded by tall cliffs and gives a great view of Lake Ohrid.
