Guam is an island in the Pacific Ocean and is part of the United States. Guam is the largest in the group that comprise the Mariana Islands. Guam has a tropical-marine climate and with limestone plateaus and foliage covered volcanic peaks. Traditional Guam culture is deeply visually manifested in dance, sea navigation, cuisine, games and songs. Tourism is a major industry on the island, being the most popular destination for travelers from Japan, Guam is often referred to as “America in Asia”.
Located in the southern section of Guam are the Talofofo Falls, inside a park bearing the same name. The falls are an extremely popular visitation spot for tourists and offer a cool respite from the warmer beaches on Guams coastline. Guests reach the falls by taking a scenic gondola ride, with views of the trees and lush forest along the way, make for a beautiful ride. Visitors are invited to swim in the freshwater pool at the end of the falls and a picnic area for those who wish to spend the day exploring the inviting environment.
Nearby is a small museum,which features pictures, information and artifacts all pertaining to Guam and its history. There are exhibits about the Chamorro people, the battles of World War II and the Japanese occupation of the island during that time period. There is a gift and souvenir shop inside the museum, and it remains open to the public seven days a week.
The Apra Harbor is one of the biggest attractions in Guam. The harbor is located on the western side of the island and near the Mariana Islands and Mariana Trench. The southern part of the port is a United States Naval Station, while the north end is the major commercial port of Guam.
The Asan Overlook is located at Apra Harbor and is home to the World War II memorial site. The names of all the men and women who endured the Japanese occupation are inscribed on this wall. The harbor also overlooks the liberation site where the US marines stormed the beaches on July 21st, 1944. This day is commemorated every year in Guam, with a festival and parade to honor the memory of Liberation Day.
Liberation Day is one of the most important holidays celebrated in Guam. The festivities begin with a week of carnivals and festivals making for a very exciting celebration. Feasting is also an important part of the occasion, and many participants do fireworks displays throughout the 19 villages. On the night of the 21st of July, there is a huge parade in Hagatna, the capital city. The parade features lively entertainers and elaborate costumes and festively decorated floats. During this week, banks, schools and many other major businesses will close their doors to celebrate the occasion and as a sign of respect.
Tumon Bay is the island that draws the most tourism to the island of Guam. The bay is enclosed in by a long coral reef, which creates a gentle pool perfect for swimming, snorkeling and fishing. The bay is popular among tourists and locals as well for being a relaxing location suited for kicking back and enjoying the warm sun. Tumon Bay is also the perfect location to take advantage of an active nightlife, upscale boutiques and delectable cuisine served in some of the finest restaurants on the island.
