Greenland is a Danish province between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. Geographically, the continent is part of North America and is associated with Europe. By area, Greenland is the worlds largest island but not a continent. The country also contains the worlds largest park, the National Park which covers 972,000 kilometers.

Off the west coast of Greenland lays the largest island in Baffin Bay, Disko Island or Qeqertasuaq. The name Qeqertanuaq means “large island”, and it is one of one-hundred largest islands in the world. There are over two-thousand hot springs on this island, making it one of the most recent areas to gain tourist popularity. Greenland is not a place for the average traveler and has some very unique sites for the tourist seeking something extraordinarily different.

The gateway to Greenland is Ilulissat, located in west Greenland. The region was originally founded by Danish explorer Jakob Sverin and called Jakobshavn, the name Ilulissat means, “iceberg”, and is what it is called more commonly, the area is also known as the birthplace of the iceberg. The local history however, dates back further than just the founding of Jakobshavn. The settlement of Sermemiut is located three miles away from the town of Jakobshavn and shows traces of a population existing as far back as 2000 B.C. In 1879, the famous explorer Knud Rasmussen was born in this town and his birthplace has been turned into the Knud Rasmussen Museum and the Spodsbjerg Lighthouse is located nearby. The museum contains exhibits that detail the travels of Rasmussen, as well as personal artifacts.

In 2004, the Ilulissat Ice Fjord was named a World Heritage Site, by UNESCO. The fjord is located off the west coast of Greenland and here guests can clearly see the how the retreat of glaciers is taking place in Greenland. Tourists who come to this area can arrange to view this area via helicopter, hiking or sailing.

Nuuk, is the capital of Greenland, as well as another common tourist attraction. The town is overlooked by the breathtaking Sermitsaiq Mountain range and home to some 13,000 people. Here tourists will find the Greenland National Museum, here guests will be able to view exhibits that contain artifacts back from the days when Greenland was settled by the Viking Eric the Red.

In Qaqortoq, tourists can visit a small Inuit (Eskimo) Museum, which contains an exact replica of a turf-built dwelling. The area is also popular among people who want to experience dog-sledding or cross-country skiing. There are also many old ruins of Norse settlements, Inuit houses and homes with historical interest.

During the summertime, Greenland is a haven for fisherman from all over the world. The island provides a wonderful opportunity for Arctic fishing in the fjords and rivers. Fishing permits are easily obtained from the local tourist office and guides are readily available to assist the novice fisherman.

The sport of ice golf is played by many of the locals and tourists who venture to Greenland in search of something different. The first grass golf course was recently opened and is located in the countryside of Nuuq. It is a nine-hole golf course complete with hills and waterholes to serve as an obstacle course. There is also a sand golf course located along the banks in Kangerlussuaq.

One of the largest attractions in Greenland would have to be the “northern lights” or Aurora Borealis, as it is better known. Traditionally the story says that when the northern lights are dancing in the nighttime sky, it means the dead are playing football with a walrus skull. Though the northern lights occur all year long, they are not visible during the summertime in Greenland, due to the midnight sun. The northern lights are best seen during the months of September through April and can be seen best on a clear, dark night. Greenland is one of the best locations in the world to view Aurora Borealis.

For the tourist who really wants to experience real snow, there are several accommodations in Greenland where this can be obliged. Ice hotels were first built in 1989 and used to be stark and plain. In Greenland, tourists will find the Hotel Igloo Village that has six adjoining igloos. When traveling during the summertime, the village of Ilulissat offers tourists the opportunity to stay in melt-proof aluminum igloos at the Hotel Arctic.

I wanna go there even I'd be the 1-st tourist, while I won't discover new lands on the poles and Grennland combines both accasually except of being the most "lost" country anyway.
