Germany: A Vacation Steeped In History

Germany is a country located in Central Europe and has over eighty-two million inhabitants. The largest city and capital of Germany is Berlin. The country of Germany is recognized as a world leader in both science and technology in several fields. Germany is historically known as Das Land der Dichter und Denker, which means the “land of poets and thinkers”.

Germany has always had a history rich in music as it is the birthplace of such famous composers as; Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig Von Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms. Many years after World War II, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra found a regular home. On the edge of Tiergarten, a new philharmonic hall was constructed, designed by Hans Scharoun and completed between 1960 and 1963. The hall is octagonal shaped and can seat up to two-thousand patrons, it was not usual for an audience to sit staring at the back of the orchestra, however, it is because it provides for excellent acoustics.

Checkpoint Charlie is another popular tourist attraction and is known all over the world. Today the grounds of what was once a key location in the Cold War, all that is left is a deserted area that is waiting for redevelopment. However, on the corner of Zimmerstrasse and Friedrichstrasse stands a small piece of the border defense that remains and now forms part of the Checkpoint Charlie Museum.

The Bode Museum stands in the Mitte district of Berlin. When the museum was first opened in 1904, it was known as the Emperor Fredrick Museum. The building is done in the Neo-Baroque style and is home to Egyptian, Papyrus, Byzantine artwork. The museum also has a Childrens Gallery and an extensive collection of coins and medals.

Peacock Island, is in Berlin and located on the River Havel. The area is 242 acres in size and was once so populated with rabbits that it used to be known as “Rabbit Island”. At the end of the 17th century there was a glass factory built on the island, the remains of this which were excavated in 1974. The island is now a popular tourist attraction and is considered a beautiful area filled with nature and exquisite scenery.

The Zoological Garden lies right in the heart of Berlin and next to the Zoological Gardens Station. Following the destruction of the original zoo in World War II, the zoo and accompanying aquarium have been rebuilt on the principal to display the animals in their most natural environment. In 1841, King Fredrick William VI, presented his pheasantry and all the animals on Pfaueninsel, to the city of Berlin. The gift served as the basis for the first municipal zoo, which was opened in 1844. Today the zoo is home to some 15,400 types of animals representing 1,670 different species.

Germany has a varying climate, but typically it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Germany is the closest European country to the equator. Though Germany is a long way from the sea, it does not experience weather like other countries in the UK. Germany has a temperate climate and does not have the same maritime climate that most of the UK experiences. Therefore the best time to travel to Germany is from May through October, when the climate is at its most pleasant.

There are several hotels available in the Berlin area, such as; Spreebogen Hotel Berlin, Hotel Alt-tempelhof, Berlin Excelsior Hotel and the Ibis Spandau Hotel. If accommodations in three star range are desired then the choices include; Agon Alexanderplatz, the Hotel Zoo Berlin, Melia Berlin, the Kurfuerstendamm and the Berliner Ring Hotel.
