The Canary Islands were created by a series of volcanic eruptions and the Costa Teguise island is located on the eastern portion of Lanzarote. The population is around 3,000 and the famous architect Cesar Manrique was born here. The land of the island is barren in some locations, however there are some very interesting landscape effects and the center and northern parts of the islands produce a great variety of wines.

Costa Teguise is most often known as simply Teguise and is the main tourist area north of the airport. Many tourists enjoy venturing into the small quaint fishing villages, while others like to soak up the sun along the coastline. The island is rich and history and culture, so there are many areas to enjoy.

There are four main beaches in Teguise and these are; Playa de los Charcos, Playa de las Cucharas, Playa de Jabildo and Playa Bastian. Each beach is set in a bay and has shelter from the trade winds that blow across the islands. The beaches here are ideally suited for snorkeling and scuba diving and viewers can view the ten species of fish that are indigenous to the islands.

By far the most popular tourist attraction in Teguise is the Volcano Park in Timanfya. This attraction was also designed by Cesar Manrique and he also designed the restaurant that sits on top of the summit of the park. Last year the park attracted almost 1 million visitors. The landscape of Timanfya gives visitors a view of what the world would have appeared like many thousands of years ago and the landscape has been compared to the surface of Mars, because of its many craters and rifts. The park offers motor coach tours, but nobody is allowed to walk through the park due to erosion concerns.

El Lago Verde, or the green lagoon, is located in the coastal fishing village of El Golfo. The small lake is well known for its sparkling green waters and is actually called El Charco de los Clicos and sits in the middle of a volcano that has been eroded by the Atlantic Ocean. The green color has been the result of the production of algae and there are also reds, browns and russet colors that provide a bright splash of color along the volcanoes interior walls and beach of black sand.

Cueva de los Verdes is a 3,000 year old, 8 foot long lava tube which formed when Montana La Corona erupted. The area is of great scientific interest and one of the longest and largest volcanic gallery formations in the world. The area was previously used as a hiding place by the island inhabitants from the pirates that would often venture to the islands in hope of plunder and robbing them. An are of the volcanic gallery is called “The Refuge”, because it was specifically used for this purpose. In 1964, a pathway was constructed which opened the caves up to the public for display.

The most popular accommodations on the islands are private apartments or villas. The Beach House is a private and privileged lodging site with the advantage of having the main beach Las Cucharas right out the front door. Local activities that are in close proximity are windsailing, fishing, mountain biking, diving, horse back riding and paragliding. For those seeking a five-star lodging the Villa-Guatiza is sheer perfection at its finest. The structure is a refurbished 200 year-old farmhouse that allows people to get away from it all. Costa Teguise is an area of unspoiled beauty and a true paradise that welcomes people who want to experience a truly tantalizing vacation.
