The Canary Islands consist of seven major islands that are located in the North Atlantic Ocean. The islands are named after the Latin term Insula Canaria, which means “Island of the Dogs”, because of the endemic breed of large dogs similar to the Canary or Presa Canario Mastiff. With the huge differences in climate and environment, the Canary Islands are an area rich with diverse plant species, wildlife and marine life.

Basilica del Pino was constructed between 1760 and 1767, with plans designed by Antonio del la Rocha. The building is constructed on one floor with three separate naves of equal height. The original yellow stoned octagonal-shaped tower from 1708 still remains at the location. The church is the spiritual center for all of Gran Canaria and every September many islanders go there to honor the Virgen del Pino, patron saint of the island.

On the northern part of the island was covered in dense forest at the time of the Spanish conquest during the 15th century. Today the Finca de Osorio in Teror and the Tilos de Moya in Los are all that is left of the one magnificent forests. There are old country houses between the hills and medicinal waters found in the park.
