While supplying the former USSR with light industry goods (mainly cotton fiber), basic equipment related to agriculture and agricultural processing, and some oil, Uzbekistan has been highly dependent on the other former Soviet republics for critically needed grain, food, machinery, and other industrial inputs.
In 1998, exports included cotton, gold, natural gas, fertilizers, ferrous metals, textiles, food products, and automobiles. Imports included grain, machinery and parts, consumer durables, and foods.
