Although there are many stone and wood buildings in Ulaanbaatar and some of the larger provincial centers, the traditional housing structure is the ger, a tent-like wooden frame structure covered in woolen felt. In 2000, about 51% of all households lived in gers; 25% lived in conventional permanent sturcture homes, and 22% lived in apartment buildings. Large apartment-house complexes with stores, services, and cultural facilities are being built in Ulaanbaatar, as well as in various other cities and towns. The average household has 4.3 people.
