Guyana - Fishing

Efforts are being made to increase the fish catch in order to improve the local diet and reduce imports of fish. The catch was 48,818 tons in 2000. The principal species caught that year were Atlantic seabob (16,733 tons) and whitebelly prawn (1,464 tons). Fish exports amounted to US $54.6 million in 2000. The Demerara Fish Port Complex, built near Georgetown with Japanese aid, includes a fish-processing plant and office facilities.
